Legislative Update

The Legislature finally wrapped up its extended/ special session, and several decisions could have a direct impact on St. Johns County.

State Budget

After weeks of delays and political fighting, lawmakers approved Florida’s budget. While leaders are touting tax cuts and fiscal responsibility, many Floridians are still struggling with rising insurance costs, a lack of affordable housing, and continued challenges facing public education.

Property Tax Amendment

Lawmakers voted to place a property tax amendment on the November 2026 ballot. Supporters call it tax relief. This will significantly reduce funding for local governments and public schools. For fast-growing communities like St. Johns County, that could mean less revenue for classrooms, roads, parks, libraries, and emergency services unless those funds are replaced elsewhere.

Redistricting

The Legislature also approved a new congressional map backed by Governor DeSantis. Legislative leaders and the governor publicly acknowledged that partisan considerations were taken into account when drawing the map- that’s insane!! Critics argue it further reduces competitive districts and weakens minority representation, while supporters say it reflects the state’s political makeup. Court challenges are happening, but the map could shape Florida’s congressional elections for years to come.

The session may be over, but the consequences are just beginning. We’ll be watching closely to see how these decisions affect our schools, our community, and our representation in the years ahead.
